SOUTHEND United sunk to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Morecambe this afternoon, with Jack Redshaw bagging a last gasp winner for the Shrimps.

Blues were below par at the Globe Arena and registered just one shot on target all afternoon.

However, they seemed to have done enough to have secured a hard fought share of the spoils until Redshaw drilled home a close range shot in the 88th minute of the match.

Both sides struggled to create clear cut chances during an uneventful first half but, after the break, Morecambe began to pile on the pressure.

As a result, Kevin Ellison and Redshaw both went close to opening the scoring before Shrimps striker Lewis Alessandra fired straight at Blues goalkeeper Paul Smith from the edge of the penalty area.

Blues, who saw midfielder Michael Timlin limp off injured in the 49th minute, replied with Sean Clohessy firing over from 25 yards.

Moments later, Morecambe keeper Barry Roche parried out Ryan Leonard’s right wing cross but substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris saw his scuffed follow up shot easily cleared off the goal-line by Shrimps defender Nick Fenton.

Morecambe made the most of the let off too by grabbing a late winner when Fenton’s deep wing cross was headed down by Ellison, enabling Redshaw to drill home a low shot from 12 yards.

The Shrimps were immediately reduced to 10 men when substitute Richard Brodie was sent off for kicking out at Clohessy.

But, by then, the home-side had already done enough to extend their unbeaten record against Blues to five matches.
