Yo-yo Southend United frustrate Ryan Cresswell following defeat at Morecambe

RYAN Cresswell was left ruing Southend United’s lack of consistency following their depressing 1-0 defeat at Morecambe on Saturday.

A late goal from Jack Redshaw condemned a below par Blues to another narrow reverse at the Globe Arena.

And that frustrated Cresswell, who just seven days previously had helped Paul Sturrock’s side win in convincing fashion at Rotherham.

“When we played well at Rotherham and won we were on top of the world and now we’re all gutted to have lost,” said Cresswell.

“We know we have the players to do well and we’ve shown it in matches like the one at Rotherham.

“But we need to be consistent if we are to be up towards the top and losing like this right at the end is hard for us to have to swallow.”

Southend withstood long spells of Morecambe pressure, with Cresswell particularly impressive until their resistance was finally broken late on.

However, the defender felt Blues should not have been fighting to pick up a share of the spoils.

“We could have pinched a point but it’s disappointing that we’re talking about trying to snatch a draw because we should be pushing to win games,” said the 24-year-old.

“We were heading, clearing and blocking everything until right at the end and one goes in.

“But while we’re having to do that at the back it means we didn’t get any chances at the other end and we’re all disappointed.”
