Ryan Cresswell joins Southend United from Rotherham United
SOUTHEND United have completed a free transfer swoop for Rotherham defender Ryan Cresswell, subject to a medical.
The 24-year-old centre-back has agreed a two-year deal at Roots Hall.
And Blues boss Paul Sturrock is thrilled to have completed his fourth signing of the summer.
“Ryan is an exciting one for us,” said Sturrock.
“He’s big and strong in the air from set-pieces and has a good goal record for a defender as well.
“We met with him over a week ago and I liked his attitude and personality. He will now provide good competition at the back with Mark Phillips and Chris Barker.”
Cresswell started his career with Sheffield United and spent time on loan with Halifax, Morecambe and Macclesfield before joining Bury in July 2008.
The defender had two seasons with the Shakers before joining Rotherham in the summer of 2010. He has since made 43 appearances for the Millers, scoring 10 goals.
And he leaves the club with words of praise from Rotherham manager Steve Evans.
“Ryan has conducted himself in an impeccable manner since myself and Paul Raynor have been here,” said Evans.
“But Ryan was one of our high earners and wasn’t set to command the game time he probably wanted here.
“Therefore Ryan and I agreed he should look at other options and there is no doubt in my mind he has joined a good club and will have a good season.
“I have great respect for Southend’s chairman Ron Martin and manager Paul Sturrock so I know he has made a good move.”
Cresswell follows in the footsteps of Kevan Hurst, Anthony Straker and Gavin Tomlin in signing for Blues since the end of last season.
