PAUL Sturrock feels his Southend United side are in need of new midfielders after seeing his side secure a hard fought 3-2 win at Great Wakering Rovers tonight.
Goals from Luke Prosser, Elliot Benyon and Gavin Tomlin saw Blues edge a pre-season friendly at Burroughs Park.
But Sturrock knows he must strengthen his team in the middle of the park.
“We're crying out for probably two new players in the midfield,” said Sturrock.
“We had a few playing on trial out there against Wakering and we're looking at a few others so hopefully it's something we can soon solve.”
Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder John Spicer, New Zealand international Jeremy Christie and ex Yoann Folly, who has previously worked with Sturrock at Plymouth Argyle, were all given opportunities to impress at Burroughs Park.
However, Blues did not have things all their own way against a spirited home-side.
“We looked at the West Ham as a training session so this was our first competitive friendly and we took a lot from it,” said Sturrock.
“We were able to look at a lot of players and a new formation and Wakering did well.
“They scored a couple of very good goals and played some decent stuff.
“We're still plodding along in pre-season and the aim is to make sure that from the Ipswich friendly onwards we're really up to speed ready for the start of our campaign.”
