SOUTHEND United’s youth team finished second in their annual pre-season tournament at the weekend. Blues were beaten 2-1 by Norwich City in the final having seen off Colchester United by the same score-line the previous day.

Southend skipper Jack Edwards was pleased by their performances.

“Obviously we’re disappointed we didn’t win, but I think we played much better in the final than against Colchester,” he said.

“The tournament went well and I’m really happy. Even though it was a tournament we were still taking it as preparation for the first game of the season.

“Come that day, we’ll be ready, and ready to win the league, hopefully.”

Mitchell Pinnock and Shamir Mullings were both on target for Blues against Colchester while Seedy Njie scored in the defeat against Norwich.

Both matches were played at Southend’s Boots & Laces Training Ground after being switched from Roots Hall to protect the first team pitch.
