I’M not going to start looking back at our season just yet because there are still five games left to go and plenty of points to be played for.

But I do think the defensively mentality of the team is something we need to look to improve moving forward.

Scoring twice last weekend against Fleetwood Town means we have now got more goals than in the whole of last season which is encouraging because it’s shows we have improved in that area, especially as we’re now playing at a higher level.

We might not have one player in double figures yet but the goals are now being shared around the team a bit more and that pleases me.

However, defensively we haven’t been the same this season and we haven’t had that clean sheet mentality I like to mention.

Why that is I don’t know but I’m not pointing fingers at just the defence because it’s down to the whole team to be stopping goals.

Of course we’re now up against better teams and better strikers but I think we should be doing better defensively.

We need to be making better decisions because we’ve dropped a number of points from winning positions.

That happened again against Fleetwood on Saturday and we need to be doing more to stop crosses coming into our box.

Fleetwood’s late equaliser was reminiscent of our poor afternoon at Rochdale and we need to be closing down the opposition players.

But that isn’t just down to the full-backs it’s something the whole team need to be doing if we are to improve defensively and get some momentum going to take into next season which I think is going to be important.

DIFFICULT GAME THIS WEEKEND

We’re definitely in for a very difficult game at Walsall this weekend.

I went to watch them at Gillingham on Tuesday night and they produced one of the best performances I’ve seen all season.

They were missing Tom Bradshaw who is a very good striker but they still had two key players out there.

Adam Chambers has been there and seen it in his career but he did a great job in front of the back four while Romaine Sawyers is also very influential for them.

He’s their playmaker who makes things happen and he’s definitely a match-winner who we will need to be wary of.

But it’s another game we’re looking forward to.

We’ve done well in the past few weeks against the teams towards the top and we’re looking to do the same against Walsall now.

Winning at Gillingham has put them right back into the hunt for automatic promotion so there is a lot riding on Saturday’s game for them.

But we’ll be going all out to get the three points.

I’ll be fielding my strongest possible side and certainly won’t be changing things up to have a look at one or two for next season.

We will be going with our best possible team and we want to get a victory there.

TED SMITH INJURED

TED Smith was forced out of Saturday’s game after injuring his thumb in his training.

He still has it in a brace at the moment and we’re not too sure whether or not he will be in contention for Walsall.

If he’s not then Josh Bexon will be in the squad again but we’re likely to still be without Noel Hunt, Michael Timlin, David Mooney and Anthony Wordsworth.

Noel is due to see a specialist very soon about his medial ligament injury and we’re going to be finding out whether or not he will require an injection to try and stop the pain.

But Tims is making good progress at the moment and hopefully he’ll still be able to play in some of the remaining matches this season.

VOTING TIME

THE shortlist has been announced for the PFA end of season awards and my own votes would go to Dele Alli for young player of the year and then Dimitri Payet for player of the year.
