Stourport Swifts 3, Ellesmere Rangers 0
Stourport struck a second half treble to see off basement club Ellesmere Rangers and maintain their own title hopes.
But it needed two late efforts to finally get the better of the Shropshire side who arrived at Walshes Meadow having suffered just one defeat in their last four league games.
There was little to choose between the sides in the first half with chances at a premium. A jinking run from Stourport’s Lewis Pountney came to nothing while John Griffin directed an effort straight at visiting keeper Dave Maguire.
The closest Ellesmere came to breaking the deadlock was five minutes before the interval when Tom Ward and Marcus Sharrod linked up well but failed to test Haydn Whitcombe in the Swifts goal.
The breakthrough finally came on 62 minutes when the referee spotted a handball and John Griffin was able to fire home from the spot.
Griffin then had a hand in Stourport’s second on 84 minutes, harrying the Rangers defence before Pountney nipped in to head the ball over keeper Maguire.
Substitute Dan Polan struck the goal of the game two minutes from time, starting and finishing the move that saw him break out of midfield before linking up with Jordan Jones and Pountney and firing home.
Swifts: Whitcombe 7, Jones 7 (Williams 88), Willets, Benbow 7, Smith 6 (Polan 77), Walker 7 (Evans 63, 6), Adams 7, Dinsley 6, POUNTNEY 8, Griffin 7, Jackson 6. Subs (not used): Bridges, Hurrell.
