BARRY Corr bagged a brace to fire Southend United to a 2-0 victory against Fleetwood Town at Roots Hall tonight.

The Irish striker had gone 12 games without hitting the back of the net for the Shrimpers.

But he netted a goal in either half to fire Phil Brown’s side to a third successive League Two victory.

Fleetwood, who currently sit second in the table, started brightly and, with 10 minutes on the clock, David Ball fired a low 25 yard shot straight at Blues goalkeeper Daniel Bentley before the speedy striker sent another skidding effort in to the gloves of the Shrimpers’ shot stopper.

With the visitors remaining on top, Antoni Sarcevic soon cut in off the right flank and curled a 20 yard shot straight at Bentley.

But Southend soon hit back with Cauley Woodrow having a close range header, following a long, left wing throw from Ryan Leonard, over the crossbar by visiting goalkeeper Scott Davies.

And, in the 21st minute, Phil Brown’s side went in front, with Corr on target for the first time since the opening day of the season.

The Irishman was picked out by a fantastic right wing cross from Kevan Hurst and bundled the ball home at the far post.

Fleetwood almost equalised six minutes later when Sarcevic sent a deflected 25 yard free kick against the outside the right post and, in the 36th minute, the winger had a well struck shot parried to safety by Bentley.

Blues soon replied with Conor Clifford chipping up a free-kick and volleying inches over the crossbar from 25 yards but Fleetwood replied at the start of the second half with Ryan Crowther sending a scorching long range shot inches past the left post.

The Shrimpers replied with Ben Coker having an inswinging free-kick from the right hand side tipped wide of the left post by Davies.

But the hosts made sure of their win in the 81st minute with Corr again on target, this time from the penalty spot.

The spot-kick was awarded when Will Atkinson was brought down inside the area by Liam Hogan.

And Corr made no mistake from 12 yards, slamming his shot high in to the left hand side of the goal.

Conor Clifford then sent a low shot, from the edge of the penalty area, against the foot of the left post before Woodrow fired inches past the same upright from a narrow angle.

But Corr’s double was enough to see him get the bragging rights over his former flat-mate Ryan Cresswell and give the Shrimpers all three points.
