SOUTHEND United secured their first win at York City since 1987 this afternoon, beating the Minstermen 3-2.

Goals from Myles Weston, Kevan Hurst and Jack Payne secured a rare victory for the Shrimpers at Bootham Crescent.

And the triumph was also Blues’ third in succession.

Southend took just nine minutes to open the scoring, with Weston firing home a well taken penalty.

Referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot after a bright run in to the penalty area from Jack Payne was upended by Marvin McCoy.

And Weston made no mistake from 12 yards, firing a well struck effort in to the right hand side of the net.

Blues remained on top with Conor Clifford and Gary Deegan both sending efforts just wide from the edge of the penalty area.

But, following a quick counter attack, York soon hit back with Jake Hyde having a low shot smothered by Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley.

With the Shrimpers soon getting back on top, Payne sent a tame volley straight at York shot-stopper Michael Ingham.

However, on the stroke of half-time, York drew back level with skipper Penn heading home from close range.

The midfielder was picked out six yards from goal after Keith Lowe volleyed Luke Summerfield’s right wing corner back in to the box and made no mistake with a firm header.

But Blues were not to be back level for long and, seven minutes after the break, they went back in front with Hurst netting his first goal of the season.

The winger reacted sharply when Ingham poorly spilt a chipped ball in to the box from Payne and fired home with his left foot from 10 yards.

Moments later, left-back Jerome Binnom-Williams charged forward and saw his own left footed shot tipped wide of the left post by Ingham.

In a bid to get back in to the game, York soon made a double change with saw ex Shrimpers winger Anthony Straker and Tom Platt entering the action.

Blues immediately made a change of their own with David Worrall replacing Shaq Coulthirst Moments later, Will Atkinson came on to replace Connor Clifford in midfield.

And, in the 78th minute, the new look Shrimpers bagged their third goals of the afternoon.

Payne started and finished the move by releasing Worrall down the left hand side before charging forward and meeting his cross with a fantastic, right footed finish from 20 yards.

The strike should have killed the game off for Southend but York were back in the game in the 85th minute when Dave Winfield headed home a fine right wing cross from McCoy.

Blues again reshuffled after conceding the goal with Mads Ibenfeldt coming on for Payne.

And Blues were able to hang on to secure another victory.
