SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown was sent to the stands as his side sunk to a 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe in the first round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

Madden scored either side of Ryan Leonard’s equaliser to dump the Shrimpers out of the competition.

And a miserable 90 minutes was compounded late on for Brown when he was set to the stands after berating referee Peter Bankes.

Despite the defeat, Blues initially started brightly with Joe Pigott just failing to reach a dangerous right wing cross from Myles Weston.

Leonard also fired over from long range before the Shrimpers were forced into making their first substitution of the afternoon after just 13 minutes when Stephen McLaughlin limped off with what appeared to be a foot injury.

He was replaced on the left flank by David Worrall but, just three minutes later, the Iron went on from with the prolific Madden again on target.

The striker reacted sharply after the Shrimpers had failed to clear a left wing corner from Luke Williams and slammed a powerful left footed shot into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

But Blues hit back to equalise on the half hour mark with Leonard on target for the second game in succession.

The midfielder raced onto the loose ball after Worrall’s left wing cross had been partially cleared and drilled a powerful, left footed shot low into the back of the net from 25 yards.

Moments later, Worrall saw a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area pushed wide of the right post by Scunthorpe goalkeeper Luke Daniels.

The former Shrimpers loanee then easily gathered Myles Weston’s effort from a similar distance before Daniels did well to tip away another long range effort from the keeper.

With Blues continuing to attack, Pigott then scuffed a left footed shot wide of the right post and, at the start of the second half, an excellent right wing cross from Weston flew across the face of goal.

Scunthorpe soon hit back with Kevin van Veen having a long range shot smothered by Bentley but, after that, there was very little goalmouth excitement.

In a bid to bolster his side in attack, Shrimpers boss Phil Brown made a second change in the 73rd minute with David Mooney coming on to replace Pigott.

However, Scunthorpe threaten next with van Veen having a header nodded off the line by Michael Timlin.

But the Iron were not to be denied for long and they went back in front in the 78th minute, with Madden again on target.

The goal was a carbon copy of his first as Blues again failed to clear another corner before Madden smashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range for his 12th goal of the season.

Immediately after the effort, the Shrimpers made their final change with Kevan Hurst replacing Glen Rea before Brown was sent to the stands to complete a miserable afternoon for the visitors who have still yet to win at Glanford Park.
