REECE Topley has quit Essex for Hampshire – and believes the move can help him fulfil his international dreams.

The 21-year-old took a wicket on his England debut on Monday, helping them to victory in their Natwest Twenty20 match against Australia in Cardiff.

He wants to represent his country for years to come and, according to dad Don, feels he has a better chance by leaving Essex.

“This is the right decision for him, moving forward,” said Don, himself a former Essex hero who enjoyed a 10-year career with the county, taking 464 wickets.

“His great goal and aspiration is to become the first left-arm fast bowler to take 100 wickets for England.

“It’s an ambition he has harboured since he was 15.

“It’s a huge wrench to be leaving, because as a family we’ve been associated with the county for a long time.

“But I spoke to various well-respected people in the game and, to a man, they all agreed it would be the best thing for his development to move on.

“Reece needs a change of environment and feels this move will further his chances of playing international cricket.”

Topley took the wicket of Australian Mitchell Marsh and finished with bowling figures of one for 35 from his four overs, as England won by five runs on Bank Holiday Monday.

Don said he felt proud and emotional watching his son on the big stage.

“He’s a very determined young man and he showed he can contribute for England,” he said.

“I’ve never doubted that and he took his opportunity with both hands.

“He bowled extremely well, with some good yorkers and intelligent slower balls.

“There were three pieces of mis-fielding from his bowling so his figures could have been even more economical.

“It was wonderful and a very emotional day.

“We were received so well and it was an occasion we’ll always remember.

“Reece was overwhelmed by all the support and good wishes he received.

“What a way to make your England debut – against the world champions, Australia.

“I’m sure he must have been pinching himself afterwards.”
