ESSEX Cricket head coach Chris Silverwood has revealed the county looked into bringing superstar batsman Chris Gayle to the club for the new season.

The West Indies superstar yesterday agreed to return to Somerset, who he played for last summer, for six games this season.

But Silverwood said Gayle was one of a number of marquee signings that Essex explored, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.

“He was one of many excellent batsmen we were looking at,” confirmed Silverwood.

“But Chris could only commit to a certain number of games because of his commitments with various T20 sides around the world.

“But I feel we have some excellent batsmen in this team.”

Another star who has hit the headlines in recent weeks is Shaun Tait. The fast-bowler, who has spent two spells with Essex, earned his first Australia call-up in five years last week, ahead of the upcoming T20 series against India.

Silverwood wouldn’t confirm or deny whether the seamer would be returning for a third spell at the Essex County Ground, but said he was delighted that he has got a recall.

“I am really pleased for him,” said Silverwood. “It was a really pleasant surprise to hear he had got the call-up. To do what he has done is just fantastic and I am really pleased for him.

“I can’t talk about whether he will be coming back or not,” he added.

Silverwood’s players are scattered around the globe at the moment.

Tom Westley is currently involved in the England Lions’ one-day international series against Pakistan A in Dubai.

While Dan Lawrence and Callum Taylor are with the England Under-19 squad at the World Cup in Bangladesh.

And Silverwood believes the young talent at the club is something everyone should be excited about.

“The future is bright,” he said. “I am excited when it comes to the youngsters as the talent is there. The likes of Callum Taylor and Dan Lawrence, and Tom Westley as well, have been playing very well and that is great for us.

“It is good experience for them on the pitch and also a really good life experience. I just hope they can bring it back here and apply it.”

Silverwood concluded by praising England captain Alastair Cook who led his side to a series win against South Africa.

“Cooky goes from strength to strength,” said Silverwood. “What I love about him is when he does come back to Essex he fits back in seamlessly. He is one of the lads and he really does love this club. He works hard and is a great example to the younger boys.”
