Penalty stop earns East Thurrock a replay
Eastbourne Town 0, East Thurrock United 0
EAST Thurrock escaped with a replay after their keeper Sam Mott came to their rescue in a feisty cup tie by the seaside.
Rocks came into the match with only one win in 10 games and were lucky not to lose this match after Eastbourne failed to convert a second-half penalty.
It was awarded for handball and veteran Rocky Baptiste, who has previously played for Thurrock, stepped up to take the kick, but a full length dive from Mott denied the striker on his debut.
Seconds later Rocks thought they had taken the lead when Leon McKenzie bundled the ball into the net, only to look in dismay to see the linesman had raised his flag for offside.
Rocks boss John Coventry felt his side had been wasteful with their chances.
He said: “We needed to take at least one of our chances and in the end we are indebted to our keeper for making a brilliant save against a side who played very well.
“The cup gives both sides a great chance to pick up some money and we have five players back for the replay so will make some changes.”
The teams will meet again in the replay at Rookery Hill tomorrow night (7.45pm kick off).
