THE much-travelled Bertie Brayley says he is up to the challenge after being appointed Burnham Ramblers player-manager with a week to go until the new season.

Brayley, 32, from Basildon, took over the vacant post only 24 hours after Lee Elliston had stepped down, having been approached by the board members at the Ryman North club.

The former Chelmsford City, Canvey Island, Braintree Town, Concord Rangers, Great Wakering Rovers, Billericay Town and ex-West Ham United FA Youth Cup winner has already had a brief spell as a manager, at Basildon United last year.

And Brayley said he couldn’t wait to get back into management.

“I was approached on Friday and met the board and, a bit later on, I got the call,” said Brayley.

“I was very excited to take on the job.

“It is going to be tough getting to know players this quickly, but it’s a challenge I am looking forward to. There are players I know and players I don’t know, but everyone will get a fair chance. I will be able to take another look at them against Enfield Town tomorrow night.”

Brayley also has international pedigree, having represented the England learning disabilities team when they reached the quarter-finals of the INAS World Football Championships in 2006.

Brayley didn’t don the Burnham kit on Saturday, but was impressed with his team’s display, despite a 2-1 loss to East Thurrock.

“I didn’t play against Rocks because I wanted to see how my players got on and I was impressed with what we had to offer. We lost to a penalty against a team in a higher division, so I am pleased with the boys’ efforts.”

And the new boss said, although he was impressed with his side’s display, he wasn’t ruling out new signings.

“I have good connections in the game,” said Brayley. “So if I want to look at other players then maybe I can make use of them and call in a few favours.

“This league and this platform are a good level for me. I can look to build my experience as a manager and help Burnham develop. I think we can grow well together.”
