NON-LEAGUE: Great Wakering Rovers have made history after they became the first Ryman League club to donate football kit to charity.

Rovers donated all their unwanted kit to KitAid – seven black bags worth – after their promotion to the Ryman North.

The kit will be sent to South Sudan and chairman Tony Butcher decided to clear-out the Burroughs Park kit room after returning to the division.

“After a total clear out of the club’s store, it soon became clear just how much old kit we had from the first team through to the seconds and youth,” said Butcher. “We collected, sorted and delivered the bags to the charity and are now considering how we can do more for such a good cause in the future.”

The club received a signed certificate from former England manager Graham Taylor, the charity’s patron, and Butcher said the club would aim to take part in the scheme anually.
