CONCORD Rangers boss Danny Cowley has told his players tomorrow’s clash at home to struggling Weston-super-Mare is the most important game of the season – not next week’s FA Cup First Round tie at Mansfield.

The Beachboys have had a memorable week that started with them qualifying for the First Round of the cup for the first time in their history and then, on Tuesday, saw them knock League One side Colchester United out of the Essex Senior Cup.

So there is a danger a return to the bread and butter of league football will be something of a come down for the Concord cup heroes.

But Cowley insists that won’t be the case.

“The last games have been good,” he said. “We have put our energies into cup competitions and got two great results which have lifted everyone.

“But I’m a big believer in that the next game is the most important one and that’s Weston-super-Mare tomorrow.”

Cowley said it is important his side get points on the board in the league before they return back to cup action next weekend when they make the historic trip to Mansfield.

“We want to get the right result to stay in and around the mid-table, which is still the main objective of this club,” he said.

“We want to consolidate ourselves as a Conference South club and that’s really challenging. The cup runs are great and they raise the profile of the club and the players, but the league is the most important.”

Cowley does, however, believe that the cup runs can have a positive effect on the league form and hopes his players will raise their games in order to stake their claims for spots in the team against Mansfield.

“There will be lots of players who want to play,” he said. “Everyone is putting their hand up in the squad and it will be a tough decision for me on Saturday. The 11 who start tomorrow will be in the driving seat in terms of having hold of the shirts and it will be up to them if to try to retain it.”

Weston-super-Mare sit second from bottom in the table and have their own big FA Cup tie to look forward to.

They will host League One side Doncaster Rovers next weekend.
