Maldon & Tiptree 3-5 Great Wakering Rovers

DAN Trenkel marked his 150th game as manager of Great Wakering Rovers with a win…and a goal!

The Wakering boss has been operating a makeshift centre-back in recent weeks but, in a landmark day for Trenkel, he came up trumps at the other end of the pitch to hand the visitors the lead.

Rovers had started the match well and taken an early lead through teenage striker Liam Nash.

The striker, on loan from Billericay, is highly rated in Essex non-league circles and scored his first for Rovers after five minutes.

Billy Johnson played in Nash and he took a touch before advancing on the keeper and shooting over him from the edge of the penalty area.

That lead didn’t last long, with former Aveley striker Nathan Koranteng striking Maldon level six minutes later.

And when the same man popped up 15 minutes later with a fine individual effort, it looked ominous for Rovers.

But up popped Johnson moments before the break to score a vital equaliser with a neat finish.

And Rovers never looked back after that.

They were given a hand when Maldon’s Adalberto Pinto, an ex-Rover, was shown a red card and although the pressure was building, the goal didn’t come until 71 minutes.

Neat work from Liam Nash saw Trenkel jump with a group of players and head into the far corner.

The lead was extended with 10 minutes left on the clock and it was Johnson again. The attacker latched onto a John Bradley knockdown to crack a volley high into the net.

Jay Nash scored his second in consecutive matches to truly end his goal drought when he held off his man, flicked over his head and crashed the ball home.

Alex Andrews scored the a consolation for Maldon, when he prodded home but it was Rovers, and Trenkel’s day.
