CANVEY Island bowled over Peacehaven & Telscombe to come from behind and secure a much-needed win.

The hosts had lost five of their last six league games and the players were under pressure to put in a big performance, as much for manager Danny Heale as themselves.

Goals from Harrison Chatting and John Easterford turned the game in Canvey’s favour, after they had gone behind to a strike just before the break from Joe Gatting.

They could even afford for Chatting to miss a second spot-kick.

And it was Heale’s men who started the better. Marlon Agyakwa had the best chance of the opening exchanges, but his effort blocked by Anthony Di Bernardo as he tried to round the goalkeeper.

But Hampshire professional cricketer Gatting was causing all sorts of problems for Canvey. He dragged the ball back from the byline for Tom Burton but he shot wide when well placed.

A moment of controversy followed, with Jack Simmons booked for diving having gone down in the box but that didn’t throw Canvey out of their stride.

Chatting saw an effort tipped wide while Rio Bryan-Edwards was denied afterwards.

Powerful new addition Enoch Showunmi was proving hard to handle and he looked set to open his Gulls account but his header came back off the post.

And two minutes before the interval, they were made to pay as they have in previous weeks.

Bryan-Edwards tripped Jamie Brotherton and Gatting stepped up to crash down the middle of Tim Brown’s goal.

But inside a minute of the second half the home side had a penalty of their own.

And Chatting took a leaf out of Gatting’s book to shoot down the middle and equalise.

Gatting hit the post before Chatting had the chance to double his tally from the spot.

Agyakwa was fouled but Di Bernardo denied Chatting at full stretch.

The final goal came with 15 minutes to go and it was Easterford who scored it.

Bryan-Edwards was denied and Easterford was on hand to tap home the rebound for his first of the season.
