Redbridge 1-1 Canvey Island (Redbridge won 4-2 on penalties)

Essex Senior Cup Round Four

Canvey Island were cruelly knocked out of the Essex Senior Cup following a penalty shootout defeat at Redbridge.

The Gulls were disappointing for much of the night although lead 1-0 as the match entered injury time, but a last minute equaliser took the match to penalties.

Canvey manager Danny Heale fielded a strong side with only two changes from Saturday’s 2-1 win against Peacehaven & Telscombe.

After a goalless first half both sides looked livelier after the restart.

The deadlock was broken on 54 minutes when a free kick into the area was headed behind for a corner. Dan King whipped the ball in and Ashley Dumas was on hand to apply the nodded finish.

Ryman One North outfit Redbridge were very nearly level eight minutes later when defender Charlie Parish unleashed a half volley from 40-yards but keeper Tim Brown backtracked brilliantly and parried the ball behind for a corner.

The last ten minutes saw the Canvey defence come under heavy pressure, which finally told in the second minute of injury time when a free kick into the area found its way to Mark Nougher who smashed the ball home from eight yards to take the game to penalties.

Mark Nougher and Marlon Agyakwa both successfully scored their opening kicks before Aaron Tatham hit the crossbar for Redbridge.

Charlie Barlow then smashed his penalty high over the bar, and Shane Wallace put Redbridge in front. Joe Carter did the same with a penalty that cleared the crossbar by a long way.

Charlie Parish and King scored for Redbridge and Canvey respectively leaving Chinedu McKenzie to win the game with the host’s final kick.

Redbridge will now host AFC Hornchurch in the Quarter Final while the Gulls will concentrate on the league.
