DANNY Heale admits he is pleased he doesn’t have to play on Witham Town’s “cows field” pitch again this season, after Canvey island conceded an injury time goal to draw 1-1.
The Gulls had looked set to claim their fourth win in succession after George Sykes popped up with his seventh goal in four matches, but a goal deep into injury time from John Watson, after Canvey defender Ashley Dumas had been sent off, ensured the points were shared.
And, despite shipping a late leveller, Heale admits a draw was a fair result.
“For how well we played in the first half, that was how well Witham played in the second half,” he said. “They produced some good moments and Tim Brown was excellent for us in goal.
“How Witham play on that cows field of a pitch I don’t know. It is unfair on them and their opponents. The referee didn’t have his best game either but like I say a point is fair.”
Jay Curran, Steve Smith and Sykes all had chances to extend Canvey’s lead while the score remained 1-0, but Martyn Guest was proving a formidable barrier.
And this was the case in the second half, as Brown made a host of saves to keep the visitors in the ascendency. But he was helpless to stop substitute Watson scoring.
The result saw Canvey extend their unbeaten run to six matches ahead of a tasty derby with rivals Grays Athletic on Saturday.
