CRAIG Edwards says his Billericay Town side are well placed to make a late push for the play-offs, despite the impending prospect of having to play three matches a week.

Town have been in superb form of late, and have not lost a home game in the Ryman premier League since September 22.

And, after their postponed Essex Senior Cup semi-final at Aveley on Monday, Edwards believes Town need to make the most of their nine remaining home league games if they are to claim a top five spot.

12th-placed Town can climb to sixth if they win their four games in hand.

Town face three of the top four in the next month, starting with a trip to league leaders Maidstone United on Saturday, and Edwards says his side will be ready after Monday’s postponement.

“It is looking more and more likely that will be the case,” he said. “It is frustrating as we were ready for the game but we had a number of players struggling with flu so it is not such a bad thing.

“We would have had a decent side but we should certainly be stronger next Monday when the game will be played.

“What it does mean is, if we win both our cup semi-finals, we will have 19 games to play in the final eight weeks of the season. Should we get play-offs we have 21 games to play in that time.

“It is really hard going, especially when you consider that this is very unlikely to be the end of the postponements.”

Despite the backlog of games, Town have lost only four of their 14 home matches this term and Edwards believes building on that form will be crucial.

“We have 15 league games left but we will be playing nine of those at home which is a massive boost. Last season we would have struggled with that be we are five months unbeaten at home and the boys have improved so much in front of our own fans.

“The 4-3 win against Whyteleafe would have been 4-4 last season and they would have won on penalties. We have that confidence now to see out results.

“We have a very tough March where we face some of the real big-hitters but we showed against Met Police we are more than capable of mixing it with them so teams won’t look forward to coming here.

“April looks a bit kinder so if we make it through March with a good points return we can look at the play-offs and go from there.”

Town head to Maidstone on Saturday in the knowledge their game will definitely be played, thanks to the hosts’ 3G surface.

And Edwards says it will be nice preparing for a game he is all but certain will go ahead.

“We went there at the start of last season and it was a really hot day and the 3G played quite slow,” he said. “You wouldn’t expect it to be the same this year and I would have thought it would be much slicker.

“Maidstone are probably the best team in the division at the moment so it will be hard but we are confident of doing well.”
