RYMAN PREMIER: Canvey Island captain Jay Curran says he can’t wait to take on Lewes tomorrow after serious concerns over his health proved to be false.

The Gulls skipper was in hospital earlier this month after blood tests results flagged up irregular zinc levels, referred to by doctors as “dangerous”.

But following a nervous wait for the results, it was confirmed Curran, 30, had nothing to worry about and would be able to play again, beginning with tomorrow’s game against relegation-threatened Lewes.

He had missed six weeks over the Christmas period with a troublesome hamstring injury but is now back and ready to extend Canvey’s recent unbeaten run.

“I had a pain in my stomach and went to the doctor who referred me to the hospital,” he said. “I went for some blood tests and when the results came back it showed some irregularities with my zinc levels.

“It was a bit random and a worrying couple of days as I was told it was dangerous and affected my heart. But I went back into the hospital for a few days later for another blood test and everything was OK!

“I wasn’t expecting it at all and when you are waiting for the result it is nerve-wracking but thankfully it was nothing and I can move past it.”

Canvey won 2-1 at Lewes only three weeks ago, and are hoping to take advantage of Lewes’ poor away from, that has seen them win only two games on the road all season.

The Gulls are unbeaten in seven, but haven’t played a competitive game since the 1-1 draw with Grays Athletic a fortnight ago.

“We have not lost in seven games and it is a good little run to keep going,” he said. “We beat Lewes at the start of this run and we have really pushed on since then.

“It was always a bit on the fence why we couldn’t win games and it is good we have moved past that tricky run and are picking up points again.

“We have George Sykes doing very well for us and it is important we keep this up against the sides around us in the league.

“But we need to keep up the pressure in winning positions. We are getting caught out as we sometimes sit back when we have the lead. We need to turn draws into wins.”

Manager Danny Heale confirmed he had a fully-fit squad to pick from for the match.
