Merstham 1-0 Canvey Island

Ryman Premier League
CANVEY Island shipped a late goal to go down to Merstham as their search for form continued in Surrey.
Gulls manager Danny Heale had targeted a top three spot at the end of the day ahead of the match, with a number of the league’s big guns facing off, but a strike six minutes from time for Phil Page was enough for the hosts to secure the points.
Merstham had former Gulls duo Merrick James-Lewis and Tommy Kavanagh in their side but they failed to inspire the hosts.
Tyrell Miller-Rodney is expected to fill the void of the suspended Tambeson Eyong, who has been handed a lengthy seven match ban after recent red cards, and he almost forged the first opening for Harrison Chatting.
However, his good run ended with the winger driving over the bar.
George Sykes saw a header tipped over, although the best chance of the half fell to Jay Curran but the attacker could only divert Glenn Poole’s centre wide of the post.
Merstham improved after the break and Michael Abnett glanced a header wide from a corner.
Canvey goalkeeper Conor Gough hadn’t had a great deal to do although he sprang into action when Fabio Saraiva’s free-kick forced him to dive low and tip it aside.
And when the goal came it was for the home team. Substitute Page finished off a flowing counter-attack to put the hosts ahead.
Richard Halle saw a late header cleared off the line but it wasn’t to be for Canvey.
Canvey Island: Gough, Pitty, Dumas, Miller-Rodney (Yiga), Halle, Sheehan, Curran (Agyakwa), Poole, Sykes, Tuohy, Chatting (Adeniji)
