STEVE Cawley says he will be doing everything possible to make sure Concord Rangers make it three Essex Senior Cup crowns in succession.

The 25-year-old striker was part of the Beach Boys team that beat Chelmsford City 2-0 at the Aspect Arena on Tuesday, as first-half goals from Lewis Taaffe and Max Cornhill booked Concord’s place in the semi-finals.

And Cawley, who has 13 goals to his name this season, says the team are desperate to become the first side to win the cup in three consecutive years since Leytonstone between 1965 and 1967.

“It was a brilliant win,” said Cawley. “We really love this competition and I want to win it for a third time. The pitch wasn’t the best and I heard a few of their fans moaning about it but that doesn’t bother me.

“The team is improving all the time and we now want to push on in the league and this cup. It will be tough to win it again but we will do our best.”

Cawley assisted the first goal, after former Canvey Island goalkeeper Tim Brown could only parry his drive into the path of Taaffe who swept home.

Seven minutes later it was 2-0. A deep cross from Ben Greenhalgh was met by former Claret’s man Cornhill and he powered a header past the despairing Brown.

That proved enough for the hosts, who can now look forward to the draw for the next round.

And Cawley said he was excited at the team’s progress.

“The second half of the first half of the season has been much better and we are starting to show more consistency. That has to be the aim going forward and we are confident we can do that.”
