BILLERICAY Town goalkeeper Jack Giddens says winning the final game of the season against Wingate & Finchley is vitally important.

Town have little to play for but league places after they fell out of contention for the play-offs in recent weeks, but the 24-year-old goalkeeper says victory remains key after a seven match winless run in the Ryman Premier League.

Giddens made several key saves to ensure a point at Hendon on Monday and says he will always want to be a winner, no matter where Town are in the league.

“I am a winner” said the stopper. “I don’t care if it is a game of conkers or a football match I want to win it.

“This team wants to finish with a win and we will be giving it everything to make sure that is the case. We haven’t got the rub of the green in recent weeks and we have gone on this unfortunate run which has hurt us.

“We know the gaffer had to build an almost entirely new team at the end of last season and any team would struggle after that so, all things considered, I think this season has to be considered successful.

“But we want to hit back with a win against Wingate & Finchley and are confident we can do that.

“It was a really tight game at their place and took a wonder goal from Ted to win it so hopefully we can have another one of those tomorrow.”

Giddens joined from Tilbury last summer and has been an ever present in the Billericay team this term, turning in a number of fine displays between the posts.

And the stopper said he is pleased he made the move.

“I have been really pleased with my performances over the course of the season,” he said. “I had the interest from England C which is always nice and even though I wasn’t selected I take heart from the fact my performances were picked up by their coaches.

“I have really enjoyed playing in this team and to what we can achieve in the future.”
