MARTIN Tuohy’s brace ensured Canvey ended the season with a point in an end-to-end game at Staines Town.

Tuohy took his tally to 25 goals in his first season at the club, as the two clubs with little to play for put on a show for the supporters.

Canvey were looking to make a better fist of the first half then they did against Burgess Hill last weekend, when they trailed 3-0 at the interval and it was the Gulls that started the better.

Veteran Cliff Akurang linked up well with Harrison Chatting but the latter’s strike was just wide of the post.

Marlon Agyakwa’s free-kick was saved as the pressure continued although Staines were growing into the match with Pat Cox forcing a fine block from Ross Johnson.

The same man could have won a penalty when Gulls skipper Richard Halle seemed to pull him in the box, with Harrison Chatting avoiding a similar appeal soon after.

But Staines did get the opener shortly afterwards when a deflected strike from Devante McKain beat Conor Gough.

Canvey ended the half the stronger but Staines remained resolute at the back come the end of the first period.

Staines saw a goal ruled out six minutes into the second half, as Tre Mitford’s header was ruled to be offside by the linesman.

Although Canvey were proving to be a threat as well, and they did get a deserved goal on the hour mark as Tuohy picked up a ball over the top and found the bottom corner.

But Staines had restored their lead 10 minutes later when Jeremy Boakye drilled home after the Gulls failed to clear their lines.

But Tuohy was not finished yet and he made it 25 for the season with a tremendous strike into the top corner to level the match heading into the closing exchanges.

Gough was needed to make several fine late saves in an end-to-end match that Tuohy could have nicked with a late free-kick that was well saved.
