Another season is over and is has been a successful one, on the whole, for the majority of south Essex’s non-league teams. With East Thurrock United and Bowers & Pitsea winning promotion and Concord Rangers and Basildon United winning cup competitions, there has been plenty to cheer in the 2015/16 season.

This week we round-up all our teams’ seasons, starting in the National League South with Concord Rangers.

Here is what manager Adam Flanagan had to say.

A week after the season has finished, how do you view what you have achieved this year?

As an overall I look at it as a good start with lots of areas for development and improvement.

What is your biggest satisfaction about the season?

Retaining the Essex Senior Cup was pleasing as we are the first team in 50 years to have done this. Also to achieve a top 10 finish.

Personally, winning the Essex Senior Cup at the first attempt as a manager and being one of only five people in the last 50 years to have won the cup as both a player and manager was a highlight.

What is your biggest disappointment about the season?

Going out of the FA Cup early to Wingate & Finchley and losing to Sutton in the FA Trophy after we had beaten them 3-1 in the first fixture.

Which player(s) has impressed you the most this season?

Concord will never be a team where success is down to one player. Our success comes down to what we do as a collective and our strength will always be in the group of players that we have.

In saying that I thought Ben McNamara did well this season coming up a league from Hendon, Tom Stephen I thought was excellent after joining from East Thurrock. James White rose to the challenge of being a skipper and scored some vital goes. Ben Greenhalgh provided numerous assists as well as goals since he was moved to a more central position. Steve Cawley in his first season as a main striker showed everyone what a good player he is and he finished in the top five goal scorers in the league.

But as I said I thought the group put in a huge effort to turn our season around and they all deserve praise for that.

What was your favourite game? And why?

Dartford away – It was my old team and we lost to them at home in terrible fashion after being 2-0 up. We played very well on the day and scored two great goals

What are your targets for next season?

The first target will always be 50 points but I feel that if we can retain our better players and I can add the players I would like then with a better start to the season then I think it could be an exciting season once again for everyone involved.

What have you learned about yourself as a manager this season?

I have learned a lot about myself over the course of the season – I have learned a lot about the level of football, the oppositions, the players and, to a certain degree, the officials. I have learned, as a team, we must have 10-11 players playing at the top end of their game each week for us to be competitive. If we have only six or seven players turn up then we lose games.

Most importantly I have learned the areas I need to improve in and next year I will improve. As a manager how can I expect the players to improve if I am not prepared to look at myself and the areas I am weak. If the players improve and I improve then as a team we will only get better and this is what Concord is all about – continued improvement.

Can you give Concord Rangers a score out of 10 for this season? And explain why?

I would give this season a score of seven – the club lost its most success manager. It lost its premier league keeper, Ex league centre half, Australia A league right back, Top Left back, England C midfielder and the best up & coming youngster the club had. We had to bring in new players to the team and many where new to the level.

We incurred some bad injuries at the start of the season that didn’t help so it took us some time to get ourselves settled and on track. Once we did this I feel we were very competitive. So to retain the Essex Cup and a Top 10 finish over the likes of Chelmsford was a solid achievement and gives us something to build on.
