THROUGHOUT last season, a host of non-league footballers picked the best players they had ever played alongside with mixed selections.

But what about the managers? Craig Edwards took over at Billericay Town in April 2010, recently celebrating six years at the helm at New Lodge.

But, of a pool of more than 200 players, who makes it into Edwards’ all-time best XI at Billericay?

Q&A with Craig Edwards

How many players did you consider?

“It took me a while. I have a list of every player that has ever played for us and I went through all the realistic candidates and there were over 100.

What did you look for when picking your team?

“There were players who were brilliant for us but had only played on loan so I didn’t feel it was fair to include them and we had others who were excellent for us but came to New Lodge after their best days had already gone.

“It is a bit of a mix but there all of these boys are loyal and had such an impact on the team when they were here.”

Would they work as a team?

“They would work very well as a team. They complement each other and they are all total winners. They have either won with me or had massive impacts at the club.

“Hopefully the squad this season can look to emulate the boys I have picked.”

GK Jack Giddens (2016-present)

The only player I have picked in my current team, although I'd hope that might be different this time next season. Jack has the lot as a ‘keeper and if he was a few inches taller would definitely be in the Football League.

RB Greg Oates (2010-12)

Our Ryman Premier League winning right-back. Greg had the most ungainly running style but was a 7/10 every game. A leader who inspired those around him.

CB Rob Swaine (2011-13)

A colossus for us when we became champions. I fell out with him after a mysteriously poor Conference South season and breaking his word on staying with us but he, as much as anyone, won us the league.

CB Chris Wild (2010-13)

Wildy wasn't as talented as Swainy but had a massive heart. As hard as nails, he'd play with his leg hanging off. With both CB's at 6ft 5in and monsters at set pieces we gained the long ball tag. Work that one out!

LB George Beavan (2013-16)

George is strong, solid and hard as nails as well. He is a total winner and deserves his place in this team.

RM Junior Luke (2011-13)

The most complete winger I've had and he'll be disappointed at the end of his career that he didn't play professional football. Absolutely rapid, two-footed and great in the air. He had it all but didn't take it seriously enough. As a bonus he had an enormous throw, which with our two CB's was pretty useful.

CM Micah Hyde (captain) (2010-11)

A nice, polite exterior hid a steely winner. As tough as they come, he could play a bit too and was an important reason I made a good start to the job, leading us to the Essex Senior Cup title.

He had played over 500 Football League games before he came to us but still reminded me of the tough old gunslinger. He had a great dressing room tear up with Wildy that I think he edged on points.

CM Callum Dunne (2014-15)

The only player I've ever known who got more pleasure smashing in a tackle than scoring a goal.

He was a real fans favourite with his never-say-die attitude. He has gone to Australia now but I believe if he had stayed injury free he'd have been that very rare commodity these days, a one-club man.

LM Harrison Chatting (2010-13)

A real match-winner. He scored vital goals for us in winning the league and had a great left foot. When we got to the business end of the season he delivered. Left under a bit of a cloud as he felt a move would help get him into the Football League but a top player.

CF Jay May (2011-13)

For some reason Jay wasn't the most popular figure with the New Lodge faithful but I'd have him in any team of mine. A great hold-up player and goal scorer. Every time I had a drink with an opposing manager they would wax lyrical about what a handful he was. The nicest lad I've had at the club, he hid a nasty edge he took on the pitch.

After winning the league with us, he secured back-to-back promotions with Maidstone.

CF Rowan Liburd (2014-15)

Started the season as our fifth choice forward and we normally only have four. He was very raw but very receptive and learnt very quickly. A really smashing lad who, at 6ft 4in, he had pace to burn. He was a natural finisher and it was quickly obvious we had a special talent. I was delighted when we got him his move to Reading.
