EAST Thurrock United striker James Walker says team unity could be just as significant as Ebbsfleet United’s star players come tomorrow’s match.

Rocks host much-fancied Ebbsfleet in the National League South, with the Kent side one of the best resourced in the division as well as boasting a host of talented individuals.

But in-form striker Walker, who has netted three times in his last four games, says he thinks Rocks’ togetherness could count for just as much when the two step on to the pitch.

“It will be tough but as long as we do our job we can get a point or three,” said Walker, 28. “We have the crowd behind us and we need to use that.

“One of my mates, Marvin McCoy, plays for them and money and quality doesn’t always mean the team gels. They all want to be the stars whereas we have team unity and that is just as good.

“The team is playing well at the moment and we are picking up points regularly. We have been coming together very well in certain games, although sometimes when we are playing well we haven’t been getting the points we deserve and on other occasions we are getting points when maybe we could be doing better.”

The former Southend United striker acknowledges he has needed to pick up the slack in terms of scoring goals in recent times, with star striker Sam Higgins only having played a few minutes of football so far this season because of injury.

And he says it can be difficult playing behind Higgins - who has scored a total of 89 goals in his last two seasons – especially as he is not an out-and-out goal scorer.

“Higgo is incredible and brings goals but with him out it has been more on my shoulders than normal,” said Walker. “I try not to apply to much pressure on myself to score but I think if I am not scoring then I must be setting someone up.

“If you create chances you will get goals and when he comes back that will be a massive boost for everyone.

“Getting on the scoresheet in recent weeks has been nice,” he added. “Things come through me and it is good to get goals and I want that to continue. Once you get a few they keep coming and I hope that is the case tomorrow.”
