GREAT Wakering Rovers were well beaten by AFC Hornchurch as they began life after Gary Ansell with another defeat.

Wakering were looking to start life post Ansell in positive fashion, albeit against a very quick and powerful Urchins side.

Home winger Abs Seymour made good work down the right but his cross missed everyone in the penalty area, while Rovers were also threatening.

Jacob Cleaver unleashed a powerful effort but goalkeeper Sam Mott was equal to it and tipped it over the bar.

Former Thurrock striker Ross Wall was proving a handful on his debut and his volley was inches over Clarke Bogard’s bar.

But Wall was not to be denied for long as more good work from Thompson saw the ball played into the striker and he headed home.

Leon McKenzie came close for the home side but Wakering improved as the half went on, albeit without any clear-cut chances to speak of.

And just seconds into the second period, Rovers fell two goals behind as interim manager Rob Polkinghorn’s half-time team talk went up in smoke.

Neat work in the midfield saw Wall played through and he did well to strike under Bogard.

Eljay Worrell sent a drive fizzing inches over the bar as Rovers looked to hit back but McKenzie hit a third and it closed at 3-0.
