GREAT Wakering Rovers vice-captain Manny Sackey says the team’s improved camaraderie is a key factor in their recent upturn in results.

Rovers had lost nine matches on the bounce before taking five points from their last three games – with new manager Keith Wilson imprinting himself on the team.

And former Canvey Island midfielder Sackey said the new manager has had a big impact on the group ahead of a ‘six-pointer’ with bottom-club Wroxham tomorrow.

“We want to win regardless of the opponent and that is what has been instilled in us,” he said. “The manager says camaraderie a lot and we do fight for each other on the pitch – which we need more than ever in our position.

“I came here thinking we would look to push on but things happened behind the scenes and things worked out differently.

“The under-21s stepped in and did well before but now we have similar young players but they have played more senior football and that makes a difference.

“There is a bit extra on this game because of the club’s situation but we need to take it one game at a time and that’s what we have done recently,” he said.

“We want to take certain points from certain games but we try not to look at the position of the opponent and just focus on winning the game.”

Sackey, 29, was part of the team that ground out a 0-0 draw at VCD Athletic and he says maintaining the mini unbeaten run was important.

The midfielder dropped down to play for Redbridge after his spell at Canvey was brought to an end by a troublesome knee injury, but he says he is enjoying his football.

“I am enjoying being vice-captain of this team as there are some really talented players here,” he said. “I joined from Redbridge a few months ago and like working with this group.”

“It was a really good result at VCD. We worked hard and the gaffer told us what he wanted us to do. We need to get points in these games and we have set up to do that.

“We know Wroxham beat VCD 4-0 recently and we knew they would come out all guns blazing but we were able to nullify that so it was a good all-around.”
