CANVEY Island were brought down to earth with a bump as a first half horror show saw them crushed 5-0 by Worthing.

The Gulls travelled to the south coast in buoyant mood after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Ryman Premier League promotion hopefuls Dulwich Hamlet.

But they were swept aside by play-off candidates Worthing, with Ryan Blackman also sent off late on for an apparent head butt.

Worthing went ahead after seven minutes, as Lloyd Dawes picked up from where he left off having scored a hat-trick on Saturday at Grays Athletic.

Omar Bugiel scored before Worthing hit the post and not even 12 minutes had been played.

Worthing hit the bar once again before Dawes made it 3-0 on 27 minutes.

Arron Hopkinson scored a fourth before Dawes made it back-to-back hat-tricks before half time.

Blackman was sent off in the second half after he responded to a poor challenge and that was that for Canvey.

There were goals galore in the Ryman North as well as Bowers & Pitsea threw away a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 against Brightlingsea Regent.

Brad Warner put Bowers ahead from the penalty spot early on and the same man repeated the feat soon after.

Callum Leahy was sent off before half time and back came Regent, converting a penalty of their own before the interval.

David Knight made it 3-1 early in the second half but that was where it started going wrong for Rob Small’s men.

Goalkeeper Lewis Greene was seemingly at fault as Regent got back into the game two minutes later.

And then two goals in four minutes had the away side ahead for the first time.

Bowers were convinced they had forced a late leveller but the ball was deemed not to have crossed the line.

Bowers' Ross Adams was sent off after the final whistle as the match ended in chaos.
