CHRIS Assombalonga says he will embrace being the focal point of Billericay Town’s attack after joining the club last week.

Assombalonga, 26, linked up with Billericay from National League side Dagenham & Redbridge and made an immediate impact.

The striker scored four minutes into his debut at Leiston and, despite Billericay losing the match 4-1, he is confident the team have the quality to reach the play-offs.

And he wants to add to his goal tally tonight when Billericay return to Ryman Premier League action against Met Police at Imber Court.

“The fact that I started and scored early on was great for me,” said Assombalonga. “It was on my son Winter’s first birthday as well so I would like to dedicate the goal to him.

“We could have scored a few more. But we weren’t physical enough and I should have got another. There is so much potential here and the desire to win games is so strong.

“I don’t know much about Met Police but it is one we want to win. I believe we can win and we want to focus on us. I want to understand my teammates and develop that understanding.”

Billericay will be hoping Assombalonga can continue scoring goals as the team continues to go through an indifferent run of form.

Town are currently 12 points off the play-off positions, after Saturday’s heavy defeat - which was the third reverse they had suffered in a week.

Assombalonga scored one goal in his six months at Dagenham, after making his name at Waltham Abbey, where he found the net 31 times in the Ryman North.

The forward is one of a number of big-name signings to have joined Billericay recently, but says the pressure of coming in to fire Billericay into the play-offs is one he is relishing.

“I embrace this,” he said. “I don’t pay much attention to what is going on behind the scenes at the club as I want to play football and enjoy it. That is why I made this move and I want to score goals.

“The group is good enough to target the play offs. That I am sure of.”

Assombalonga is not the only one in his family to have made a success in the game.

Younger brother Britt plays in the Championship for Nottingham Forest, having scored 15 goals for Southend United in the 2012-13 season.

And Chris says his brother continues to inspire him, having consulted him over the move to New Lodge.

“I always talk with Britt and seek his advice,” he said. “He says I need to go out and play football and enjoy it.

“I felt I could achieve a lot here and I’m fortunate to have him by my side.”
