CANVEY Island favourite Jay Curran says the club’s fate is not sealed yet ahead of their date with destiny against AFC Sudbury tomorrow.

Back-to-back defeats over the Bank Holiday weekend means the Gulls’ fate in the Ryman Premier League is now out of their hands, with just one game remaining.

Canvey must beat already relegated Sudbury and hope two results in five other matches go their way.

Curran came through the club’s youth ranks and has scored more than 100 goals for the club since his debut 11 years ago.

Yet to score since his return, Curran says all Canvey can do is win their match tomorrow and hope results elsewhere go their way.

“It is definitely not over,” said the 32-year-old. “There are a lot of teams in this and, although we are the worst off in terms of goal difference, we believe in ourselves.

“Some of the teams have hard away games but we just need to win our match otherwise it’s irrelevant.

“We must do our best and do what we have done in recent games and keep going.

“We are unlucky to still be in amongst it all after the run we have been on but it is what it is.”

Canvey have won six of the last 10 matches but defeat to Havant & Waterlooville and Billericay Town has left them in a bleak position, albeit not an unfamiliar one.

Two seasons ago Canvey needed a win to stay up and were in the relegation places at half-time.

However, victory may not be enough this year. But Curran hopes that having had the odds stacked against them in the past will better prepare them for this match.

“We have been here before and all we can do is win,” he said. “In terms of the position we are in, the pressure has gone somewhat. It is out of our hands now.

“There are a lot here that were here two years ago. We were 2-0 down against Wingate & Finchley and were down at half-time but we came back to win 3-2 and that shows this team’s mental toughness.

“We were disappointed to take nothing against Billericay on Monday but that match has gone. We are all focused on keeping this club up now.”

l RUNDOWN: Matches do not get any bigger than this for Canvey Island.

Nine years after their promotion to the Ryman Premier League, failure to win tomorrow would see them return to the fourth tier of non-league football - while even a victory may not be enough to keep the Gulls up.

A good run of recent form has coincided with an upturn in form of their rivals, with a number of parameters to take into account tomorrow afternoon, although one thing is certain. If Canvey fail to win, they are relegated due to their inferior goal difference.

l Canvey draw or lose - Canvey are relegated l Canvey win & Burgess Hill Town, Folkestone Invicta win & Hendon, Met Police and Harrow Borough draw or win - Canvey are relegated l Canvey win & both Burgess Hill Town, Folkestone Invicta draw or lose - Canvey survive To put it simply, if Canvey win and two teams out of Harrow, Met Police, Hendon, Folkestone and Burgess Hill lose, Canvey survive.

And with Met Police facing a trip to second-placed Bognor Regis Town, and Folkestone and Hendon also facing in-form teams, Canvey will believe their fate is not yet determined.
