LOUIE Theophanous says the opportunity to play a part in the revolution of Billericay Town was a chance he ‘couldn’t turn down’.

The 25-year-old striker joined the big-spending Ryman Premier League club last week from Chelmsford City.

He joins a star-studded squad that manager Glenn Tamplin has vowed will win the competition next year and earn promotion to the National League South.

And he said he is determined to make that happen, after a former manager helped the move come about.

“The initial contact I had was through the club’s head coach Harry Wheeler,” said Theophanous.

“I worked with him at St Albans City the season before last. I respected him very highly there and he gave me a call and he told me about what was happening at Billericay and if it was something I was interested in.

“Harry was was head coach at St Albans and when the manager left he took over for about a month.

“I know how he works and he set up a meeting with Glenn (Tamplin).”

Theophanous moved from St Albans to Chelmsford midway through last season, helping them to the National League South play-off final, which they lost to Ebbsfleet United.

The hitman scored 28 goals last term, and has surpassed 25 league goals in each of the last four seasons at the second tier of non-league football.

But while he had another successful season last year, he said he he had to make this move and was determined to help Town become a Football League club.

“Chelmsford had a great season but Glenn was so ambitious,” he said.

“It was exciting and I saw the calibre of players he was signing.

“When I spoke with Glenn face-to-face I saw why he was able to get these guys in in. All players want to play in the league and we have the chance to be a part of that. I couldn’t turn down a chance like that.

“Billericay have signed me as I can score goals,” he added. “I have got more than 25 in the league in all of the last four seasons so I would like to keep that up.”

Theophanous was unveiled on the same day as Robbie Evans, Danny Waldren, Dan Walker, Josh Uruqhart and Ricky Modeste - all of whom join from the National Leagues.

And he admitted he was excited to link up up with the club’s formidable striking options - with Bricknell, Adam Cunnington and Jake Robinson all vying for starting spots.

“I am also able to play in wider positions which might compliment the likes of Billy Bricknell and the club’s other strikers,” he said.

“Most of us are aware of the others game I think. We have met before or played against each other.

“There is a lot of talent and I am predominantly left-sided so will have Paul Konchesky playing behind me.

“It is crazy and I just want to get started now.”
