FA Cup preliminary round

HARINGEY Borough proved to be the scourge of Bowers & Pitsea once again as two second-half goals proved enough to send Rob Small’s team out of the FA Cup.

Ayrton Coley and Anthony McDonald netted to win the match for Haringey.

Bowers had enjoyed some good battles with Haringey in the past, but had missed out to them in the race for Essex Senior League promotion in 2015 and the Isthmian North play-offs last term.

Bowers looked lively in the opening exchanges.

Fahad Nyanja sent a curling effort over the crossbar before Haringey started to settle.

On 16 minutes, the ball dropped to David Olufemi at the far post and he blasted at goal from 10 yards.

However, Callum Chafer was equal to the effort, with John Easterford expertly blocking the follow-up.

Bowers were dealt a blow when right-back Tom Hine was stretchered off with a knee injury, with the defender sent to hospital shortly afterwards.

His replacement was Vlad Sighiartau and he had the next chance of the afternoon.

Five minutes before the break, Lewis Clark headed a swinging ball into his path but the Romanian sent a first-time volley inches over the crossbar.

Haringey’s Kai Heather shot wide on the stroke of half-time, but Haringey were in the ascendency.

Michael O’Donoghue crashed a low shot off the far post but the opening goal was seemingly only a matter of time away.

Coley got it midway through the half. A ball was played back to the striker and he drove in at the near post.

Bowers cranked up the pressure in the final 10 minutes and looked set to level in the dying embers when Ben Sartain unleashed a powerful effort from eight yards.

But Valery Patetat was right behind it and Haringey broke to finish the contest.

McDonald was played clean through and slotted past Chafer to send Haringey through.
