ADAM Cunnington scored a late equaliser as Billericay Town were left to regret a number of missed opportunities in a 1-1 draw against Margate.

It appeared as thought the hosts would be left pointless but for the rangy striker’s late intervention.

With Jake Robinson nursing a slight injury and left on the substitute’s bench, Ricky Modeste was the most forward for the hosts.

And it was the Grenadian that forced the first save of the afternoon, bursting down the left and into the penalty area before poking at goal. But Sam Sargeant was up to the challenge between the posts.

Modeste and Sam Deering came close, although Margate felt they were denied a penalty on the half hour after a challenge by Danny Waldren in the penalty area.

Gate's Jordan Chiedozie then went down under pressure from Dean Inman but Margate were to get their break on the stroke of half-time.

Dave Martin was allowed too much time on the edge of the penalty area and he drilled across Alan Julian and into the far corner.

Billericay made three substitutions at the break, and two almost combined for the equaliser. But Robbie Evans's header across the face of goal was turned into the side netting by Louie Theophanous from a tight angle.

A Matt Paine effort was tipped over the crossbar by Sargeant and Inman’s header was even closer up the other end, dropping inches wide of the far post.

The more advanced Paine fizzed inches wide of the upright but for all the chances it should have been Margate that put the game beyond doubt.

Chiedozie turned his marker inside out but a superb save by Julian with his outstretched leg denied him.

Joe Kizzi’s header was cleared off the line with five minutes remaining, and the hosts were left incensed after Theophanous was not awarded a penalty with five minutes to go – with the striker seemingly tripped.

But Billericay did draw level. An excellent corner by Sam Deering was met by Cunnington who headed home via the underside of the crossbar.

A header was cleared off the line as Billericay threw the kitchen sink at Margate but it wasn't to be.
