BOWERS & Pitsea returned to winning ways and closed the gap on the leaders to three points with victory against Soham Town Rangers.

Rob Small’s team had lost the last two matches but remained in second place in the Isthmian North.

And they took the early initiative against Soham. Callum Leahy headed a Jamie Dicks cross wide when well placed before Fahad Nyanja dawdled when one-on-one, with the opportunity smuggled to safety.

The moment of composure came from an unlikely source. Defender John Easterford was on hand to tap home after efforts from Leahy and Martyn Stokes had failed to find the net.

Ben Sartain twice sent shots down the throat of goalkeeper Josh Pope before Bowers did deservedly double their lead.

Lewis Manor and David Knight combined for Nyanja to tap into an empty goal. And two became three on the stroke of half-time.

Jamie Dicks’ corner was met by Manor and he gave the goalkeeper no chance with a fine header.

Into the second half, Knight sent a free-kick off the crossbar, with Chafer again called into action up the other end to preserve his clean sheet.

Nyanja did get his second with 10 minutes to go, finishing from close range after good work by Ashman.

And that was more than enough for Bowers.
