BILLY Bricknell said his cup final winning goals were three of the best he has scored in his career.

The Billericay Town striker scored three goals in 15 minutes late on as Harry Wheeler’s team defeated Met Police 5-3 after extra time in the Isthmian League Cup final.

Trailing 3-1 after 86 minutes, the writing looked to be on the wall but a brace from Bricknell levelled it up.

And the striker, who scored a hat-trick in last year’s League Cup final as well, is now looking to add the league title to League Cup and Essex Senior Cup crowns scooped this season.

“We were losing the game but we knew if we got one goal back we would give ourselves a chance,” said Bricknell, who scored all three goals with his weaker left foot.

“We didn’t actually create much in the game but I have ended up scoring three of the best goals of my career.

“They were with my weaker foot but they were all quite good, to be fair. I wouldn’t have dreamed of scoring those three and they were up there with the best three I have scored.

“Getting a hat-trick is great but we now want to win the league. We need to get the Wingate result right and take the pressure off ourselves.”

However, it was a final that so nearly got away from Town with the tide only swinging in their favour after Met Police substituted Town’s tormentor-in-chief Shaq Hippolyte-Patrick.

Met Police missed a host of chances to put the game to bed at 3-1 and Town made them pay.

Jake Robinson had scored his 53rd goal of the season after 11 minutes to put Billericay ahead before Tom Bird levelled from the penalty spot.

Two goals in three second half minutes before the hour from Jonny Wright and Luke Robertson appeared to take the game away from Town.

Step forward Bricknell. Two powerful drives levelled the scores before he curled home his third six minutes into extra-time. Captain Danny Waldren added a fifth as Billericay eased to victory in the end.

THE PREVIEW: Billericay Town could not be heading into the final run-in in better shape.

Two trophies under their belt, albeit some heavy legs as well, Billericay need four wins from their last six games to clinch the league, assuming the chasing pack do not drop any points.

In terms of the league, Town are sitting pretty at the top with six games remaining.

Dulwich - who played Thurrock last night after the Echo went to press - were beaten by Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday to give Town a clear shot at the league with two weeks remaining.

Wingate & Finchley's play-off charge has ground to a halt after a poor run of results that has seen them win just one of the last 11 matches.

One of those defeats was against Billericay last month, a game which saw Billy Bricknell chalk up his 100th goal for the club.

MEN TO WATCH: Rob Laney and Reece Beckles pose a threat in forward areas, with Afolabi Obafemi a former Town striker.

WHEN & WHERE: Tomorrow at 3pm at the AGP Arena, Blunts Wall Road, Billericay, CM13 9SA

WHAT THE BOSS SAID: “Momentum is so important for us and we continued that by winning the cup,” said head coach Harry Wheeler. “That was my only concern. This is the last one. we wanted a treble and we are close to it now.

“Wingate will pose a challenge, of course. We played them recently so we know their strengths and weaknesses as they will know ours.

“We back ourselves in every match and we are all focused on what we need to do in these final few games.”
