RICKY Modeste’s late strike handed Billericay Town a crucial win as they edged even closer to Isthmian Premier League glory.

Modeste pounced after Liam Hughes’ shot was saved to score the only goal at Dorking Wanderers with 12 minutes remaining.

Town were denied on a host of occasions by an inspired home goalkeeper while Dorking were also halted by Alan Julian.

But one goal was enough for Town on their travels as they move four points clear with four matches remaining.

Canvey Island’s Isthmian North play-off hopes were dealt a blow after they were walloped 4-1 on home soil by bottom side Norwich United.

The Gulls needed to build on some good home displays but were undone by an Adam Hipperson hat-trick.

The visitors took the lead on 16 minutes when Hipperson saw off the attentions of Steve Sheehan before cross for Nathan Stewart to tap home.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 after Canvey failed to clear the danger and Hipperson thrashed the loose ball home.

Canvey reduced arrears two minutes later as George Craddock’s deflected effort found the corner but that was as good as it got.

Five minutes before half-time Hipperson profited from a George Allen error and the presents kept coming for the away side.

Ashley Dumas’ under-hit back pass was picked up by Stewart who squared for Hipperson to take into an open goal.

Canvey’s evening was summed up with 15 minutes to go as Martin Tuphy’s penalty was palmed aside.
