THE Southend Charity Football Competition, run in conjunction with the local non-league football season, raised the sum of £3,500 during the 2008/09 campaign. It was decided that this money would be divided between five local charities or good causes.
At the recent annual general meeting of the competition, held at the Len Forge Centre in Eastwoodbury Lane, representatives of the following five charities received a cheque to the value of £700 each: The Burned Children’s Club, who provide support for children who have suffered from fire injuries and their families.
BUST, the Lady McAdden's women’s breast screening unit, based in the grounds of Southend Hospital and which survives on donations.
SHARE, which is a Basildon based charity that provides services for any person with physical, mental or learning disabilities within Essex.
Fairview Under-5s Group, who are a play group based in Rayleigh who need funding if they are not to have to close down due to increased costs of materials.
The Eastwoodbury Lane Centre, which is a charity in its own right and provides facilities for the playing of non-league soccer and a centre for various other activities. which is planning to expand in the near future.
All monies raised have been as the result of a season long competition involving in excess of 60 clubs from the Southend and district area for which organisers are extremely grateful.
