WAKERING hopes that they would find leaders Lowestoft low in confidence after their 5-0 midweek thrashing at Concord proved wide of the mark.
And this comprehensive defeat means that the village hosts are fading fast in their own play-off bid after a far better than expected campaign.
Following Iain O’Connell’s five-year reign, the new Wakering managerial team of Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor have been unlucky to not only be up against top opposition but also below full strength themselves for their first two matches in charge.
Here the loss of top striker Neil Richmond, away on a snowboarding holiday, left them short of firepower.
They lost at in-form Maldon in midweek, but probably just about shaded the opening half here with Billy Johnson’s deflected shot that went wide being the closest they came to a goal.
But, backed by their vociferous travelling fans in a crowd of 175, Lowestoft took over after the break.
They had already missed out on one golden opportunity when ace marksman Matt Nolan headed wide when faced with an open goal from Andy Fisk’s cross before top scorer Nolan made it 1-0 after 58 minutes.
Fisk made it 2-0 from Scott Mitchell’s assist on the hour and Mitchell himself rounded off the scoring to see his side open a two-point gap at the top with three games in hand on nearest rivals Concord Rangers.
