Billericay continue to hold the Indian sign over runaway leaders Dartford.
Having inflicted a first away league defeat of the season on the Kent side last month, they completed a magnificent double on Saturday at Darts’ home.
Dartford had suffered only three league defeats all season before this game and a win of this magnitude by a Billericay side who started the game in the drop zone looked highly unlikely.
Town started with the unenviable record of sporting the worst scoring total in the division — having hit just 27 goals in 28 games. The hosts had the best defensive record, having conceded only 24 goals in 26 matches.
But all that counted for nothing as Billericay took the game to their hosts right from the start and caused all kinds of problems for the Darts before the home side took a 21st-minute lead against the run of play to the delight of their fans in a 1,155 crowd. Lee Burns headed home from a cross from ex-Great Wakering favourite James White, who is enjoying a fine season with the top dogs.
But Billericay were not to be denied and were level within three minutes, a quick free-kick seeing winger Dave Wareham racing into the box to fire the equaliser under keeper Andy Young.
Billericay started the second-half at a storming pace and were 3-1 up within five minutes.
On 46 minutes Wareham hit a scorching left-foot shot from 20 yards which hit the net before Young had a chance to move.
Then, four minutes later, top scorer Billy Bricknell fired home his first goal since his month-long injury-enforced break. Dartford tried hard to get back in the game with White seeing his shot pushed away by Paul Nicholls in the visiting goal and Carl Rook’s effort rebounding off the keeper’s shoulder.
But Billericay rightly had the last word when, after Danny Green’s 88th-minute vicious shot was well saved, recent striker signing Danny Charge, who had come off the bench, controlled the ball and shot home Town’s fourth.
Billericay climbed out of the drop zone and must now look to win home games with two fellow strugglers, Hendon tomorrow and bottom club Margate on Saturday, if they are to put all worries of relegation behind them.
l Billericay bowed out of the League Cup on Thursday when, with virtually a reserve side, they lost 3-1 at home to Division One South Sittingbourne.
