SOUTHEND Manor were left feeling sick in more ways than one when they were unable to fulfil their Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy semi-final at Bethnal Green United.

The Southchurch Park club were hit by a sickness and diarrhoea bug and would have been forced to make the trip with only seven players.

“Due to players being cup-tied, injured or not having fulfilled the competition rules that they had to have been on the teamsheet in two previous games for the club, we would only have had 13 players for the tie,” explained club chairman Bob Westley. “Three of those missed training due to the bug on Thursday night and three more went down with it on Friday.

“I’m in the process of getting the medical certificates of those afflicted by the bug together which I’ll take along to the monthly meeting of clubs on Wednesday.

“Obviously it’s a major disappointment as the Gordon Brasted is a prestigious competition and we were very keen to try and make the final.

“But seven players would not be enough to fulfil the fixture so we were powerless to do anything else than request a postponement.”

Whether Manor will be given a second chance is likely to be decided at Wednesday’s meeting. Whoever goes through will meet Takeley in the final on Monday, April 5, after they beat Witham Town 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 extra-time draw in the other semi-final.

In the league two late goals from Steve Poulter saw Basildon United home 3-1 at Eton Manor. An own goal had given the visitors an early lead which Courtney Linton equalised.

Paul Carr gave Bowers and Pitsea the lead in the home derby with Hullbridge Sports, who levelled through an own goal in a 1-1 draw.
