A SUPERB man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Louis Godwin-Green highlighted village club Wakering’s first win under the new managerial team of Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor.
The duo took over when previous boss Iain O’Connell departed for Premier side Margate and had lost their first two games in charge, albeit with weakened line-ups.
But at a Thamesmead side who went into the match lying third, Rovers had key striker Neil Richmond back from a snowboarding holiday and were able to pair him up front with new signing Rob Whitnell, from Essex Senior League club Witham Town.
The hosts went close on 15 minutes when top scorer Andy Constable fed Lee Barnett, who lobbed Godwin-Green but saw his effort hit the bar.
Joe Gardner shot wide when set-up by Richmond, but Wakering took the lead on 26 minutes when Dan Trenkel fired home in fine style.
An outstanding Godwin-Green effort to thwart Constable on 38 minutes proved decisive as newcomer Whitnell made it 2-0 five minutes before the break.
With Steven Heffer and Nikki Beale enjoying superb games at the heart of the Wakering rearguard, the visitors, with Godwin-Green’s help, were able to repel all that Thamesmead threw at them.
Even when the hosts were awarded a 75th-minute penalty, Godwin-Green threw himself across goal to turn Constable’s well-struck effort wide down by the post.
Three minutes later, Scott Mulholland did grab a goal for the home side, but Rovers took the points and will look to add to them in tomorrow night’s visit to Aveley to take on Romford.
>It was also a memorable day for Wakering’s reserves who won the Essex and Herts Border Combination Cup final at their Burroughs Park home when they beat Barking 2-1
