Ward:Tilson will be an asset

STEVE Ward was delighted to hear his old teammate Steve Tilson had been appointed as the Gulls’ new boss.
The centre back, who left Canvey at the end of last season, said an appointment of Tilson’s calibre was just what Canvey needed.
“It’s nice to see someone of Steve’s stature involved at Canvey,” said Ward, who is now an assistant manager/player at Maidstone United.
“His training will be second-to-none and the players will benefit from his experience.
“He will also have a lot of contacts and I’m sure his name alone will attract some big players to the club.”
Ward played alongside Tilson throughout his five seasons at Park Lane.
He said the former Southend United man was one of the best two players he’s ever played with — the other was Mark Stimson, who also played in that famous Canvey side under Jeff King.
Ward said: “Tilly scored a phenomenal amount of goals and just never gave the ball away.
“He put in 9/10 performances every week while the rest of us were struggling to get 7/10!
“He never had a poor game and if he can inspire those players there now to play like that a bit then they will be doing well.”
