Concord return to winning ways at Carshalton

CONCORD returned to winning ways with an excellent display in a 2-1 win at Carshalton Athletic, writes Jack Smith.

It gave the Beachboys their first points of the campaign and sets them up nicely for today's visit of Kingstonian.

Danny Spendlove was a constant thorn in the side of the hosts and, after he'd gone close, his team-mate Billy Coyne hit the crossbar with a cross-cum- shot.

Spendlove then laid on a chance for Jason Hallett to shoot just wide, but the former Canvey striker did not have to wait much longer to give his side a deserved lead - and in some style.

Hallett picked up the ball on the right and rode two challenges before scrumptiously chipping over the hapless Hamann from 20-yards to send the travelling support wild.

The impressive Reece Harris then cut the ball back for Tony Stokes to curl an effort at Hamann.

Spendlove thought he'd made it 2-0 with a shot heading for the top corner until it was flicked over by the outstretched fingertips of Hamann.

The Concord assault continued after the restart and Spendlove saw his poked effort come back off the inside of the post, before Stokes forced Hamann into yet another save.

So it was a sobering moment when the hosts drew level when John Eaterford failed to deal with a long ball forward and Lewis Taylor unleashed a shot into the bottom corner.

The hosts' joy didn't last long, though, as Concord re-took the lead from the kick-off as a slick passing move ended with Stokes flicking a reverse pass into Spendlove, and he came up with a cool finish.

And there was another boost for the Beachboys late on when striker Harry Elmes came off the bench for a return to action following his spell on the sidelines after suffering a suspected epileptic fit.

And the popular striker marked his comeback Elmes by curling an effort just over as his side saw out the game for a welcomed win.

Concord: Jordan, Coyne, Glozier, Cowley, Easterford, Lampe, Spendlove, J Elmes, Hallett (H Elmes 75), Harris, Stokes.

Echo MOM: Danny Spendlove (Concord)
