Ryman Premier League

Billericay Town 2, Met Police 1

A LATE Dave Collis goal kept Town top of the table on Saturday evening.

The former AFC Hornchurch man found space at the back post to head home James Hawes’ cross and keep his side at the summit heading into February.

The play-off chasing visitors looked like they might come away with a point, but Town showed the determination which has seen them set the pace in the Ryman Premier for so much of the season.

It kept Billericay two points ahead of AFC Hornchurch and Lowestoft, who both won on Saturday and have games in hand on Town.

Lowestoft could take over at the summit if they win at Kingstonian tonight.

Billericay recalled young striker Courtney White from his successful loan spell with lower league Waltham Forest, and he put in an impressive display alongside Jay May in attack.

The Police started well but found themselves behind early in the first half when Harrison Chatting found White in the box, and he was tripped by Ryan James has he prepared to pull the trigger.

Richard Halle fired home the resulting spot-kick to give the hosts the lead.

And they almost doubled their advantage late in the half when White set up Jay May but his tame shot did not trouble keeper Jamie Butler.

The Police went close to an equaliser on the stroke of half-time but keeper Dale Brightly made a good save to keep out Eddie Smith’s header.

But the visitors did draw level early in the second half when a quick counterattack ended with Jack MacLeod heading home.

At the other end Butler kept out a Harrison shot, before the winner came 10 minutes from time as Collis planted a firm header past the static Butler.

But there was a nervy finish for Town who needed a goal-line clearance from Chris Wild as Sam Hurrell went close to secure all three points.

Billericay: Brightly, Oates, Hawes, Halle, Sobers, Wild, Chatting (Berry 90), Collis, May (Onwubiko 74), White (Radley 93), Poole.

Echo MOM: Courtney White.
