Ryman Premier League

Enfield Town 2, Great Wakering Rovers 1

ROVERS suffered late heartbreak at high-flying Enfield, despite getting off to a great start.

The visitors shocked the 341-strong crowd inside the opening minute when an Adam Holmes throw-in was headed on by Ashley Hawkins and swept home by debutant Teddy Nesbitt with his very first touch of the ball in a Rovers shirt.

And they should have doubled their advantage when Nathan Fletcher was agonisingly close to contacting with a corner from the left.

The prolific Liam Pape offered the hosts their first real threat, but his free kick was easily dealt with by keeper Louis Godwin-Green.

And they were almost level when Dean Pennant thundered a header against the crossbar following Jay Siva’s cross.

Hope shot wide from close range late in the half, and then Rovers defender Jack Mochalski hacked Neil Johnson’s effort off the line.

Godwin-Green was then called upon to tip over a speculative effort from Johnson.

And the pressure finally told five minutes after the restart when the impressive Walid Matata volleyed home from close range following some clever flank play.

Rovers almost re-took the lead when Billy Johnson headed over from close range.

Nesbitt then cleared Pennant’s header off the line, but the visitors were finally undone, in somewhat controversial circumstances when referee Adrian Oldershaw ordered Enfield’s Rudi Hall to re-take a free kick from the right-hand side.

Hall’s second delivery was met by Rovers defender Fletcher, whose header flew into his own goal to give the home side the points.

Nesbitt, who arrived on loan from Southend United late last week, said: “I was pleased with my goal, and I couldn’t miss really.

“And I believe we can pull away from the bottom end of this league, but we’ve just got to start taking our chances.”

Great Wakering: Godwin-Green, Mochalski, Holmes, Carlile, Fletcher, Skelton, Johnson, Trenkel, Hawkins, Stevens, Nesbitt.

Echo MOM: Teddy Nesbitt.
