STEVE Jones’ son Liam has followed in his father’s footsteps by signing for West Ham United.

Eight-year-old Liam, who can play as a striker or on the wing, scored more than 100 goals for Langdon Pumas last season.

And the youngster, from Laindon, has now put pen to paper with the Hammers.

“Liam’s done really well and we’re all really proud and happy that he’s signed a contract with West Ham now,” said Steve, who enjoyed two separate spells with the Hammers himself.

“He has been playing two years up for his age, has bags of pace and a great left foot, which he certainly doesn’t get from me!

“He’s already scored more than 150 goals in matches he’s played for West Ham and is doing really well, but it’s important to remember he is only eight.”

Liam is currently a pupil at Lincewood School in Langdon Hills and will be looking to continue his fine scoring form after already netting against Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton and Aston Villa.

His father Steve hopes his son can now secure a second fairytale for his family after he was also snapped up by the Hammers from non-league Billericay Town back in 1992.

“I don’t think what happened to me will ever really happen again to anyone else,” said Jones.

“I was playing non-league football and two weeks later I was on the bench for a team in the top division, it was crazy.

“West Ham has always been my club so it was extra special to play for them and it’s extra special Liam is there too.”

Steve is also still involved in football, helping to coach the Langdon Pumas.

But the 44-year-old combines that with working at the Laindon branch of Tesco.

“I help with the deliveries and I absolutely love it,” said Jones, who also played for Southend United towards the end of his career.

“I know there aren’t probably many ex-Premier League players working in Tesco, but there are probably are quite a few who are skint.

“I still help coach and get to watch Liam as well so I still get my football buzz and I really enjoy my job too so it’s a great combination.”
